Mission & Background
Founded in 1958, APPA is the leading not-for-profit trade association made up of more than 1,200 pet product manufacturers, their representatives, importers and livestock suppliers. Our membership consists of a diverse group representing both large corporations and growing business enterprises worldwide.
APPA's mission is to promote, develop and advance pet ownership and the pet products industry and to provide the services necessary to help its members prosper. To accomplish these objectives and to provide APPA members with valuable benefits, the Association works hard to develop programs and services which serve our members’ unique needs. By conducting industry-related market research and holding educational seminars and teleconferences, APPA helps keep you in the know about important industry information, and gives you the tools you need to make important business decisions. Global Pet Expo
Global Pet Expo, the pet industry's largest annual trade show, is presented by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA). The 2016 Show featured 1,087 exhibitors, 3,218 booths and more than 3,000 new product launches. 6,170 of the most qualified pet product buyers in the industry attended the Show, including an impressive number of international retailers.
In 2017, Global Pet Expo will take place March 22-24 in Orlando, Florida. Global Pet Expo is open to independent retailers, distributors, mass-market buyers, and other qualified professionals. For more information, visit www.globalpetexpo.org.
Government & Regulatory Affairs
Additionally, APPA has an established Government and Regulatory Affairs Department whose activities are directed towards the advancement of APPA members and the pet industry through member cooperation and advocacy. The committee also monitors and responds to legislation and regulations. Most recently, APPA’s Government Affairs team played a key role in getting the Minor Use and Minor Species Animal Health Act (MUMS) signed by President George W. Bush. This is one of the most significant pieces of federal legislation to the pet product industry to be passed in recent history.
Promoting Pet Ownership & the Pet Industry
As the pet industry’s leading association, APPA has worked to grow and support the industry in many ways beyond the direct services APPA provides its members and retailers through Global Pet Expo. Over the past six years we have supported the pet industry with an unprecedented $10,000,000. These contributions have driven and sustained significant programs designed to strengthen our industry, increase pet ownership, and build awareness of the joys and health benefits of pet ownership.
Here are some of the organizations APPA supports: Pets Add Life, Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative, Pet Care Trust, Pet Leadership Council & the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council.
